Pablo Keins (1909 - 1967) Antiquarian Booksellers in Exile

He was Leo Olschkis grandson and Bernard M. Rosenthals cousin: Pablo Keins, born in Berlin in August 1909, studied Roman language and literature in Munich, where he was a student of Karl Vossler. After his PHD Pablo Keins decided to follow the example of his famous relatives and became an antiquarian bookseller. He worked at LArt Ancien in Lugano, since 1929 in Zurich, and moved to Madrid in 1934 where he established his own business. The greatest success of the Libreria J. Pablo Keins was the purchase of a huge library containing rarities of Old Spanish literature.
With the Spanish Civil War Pablo Keins was forced to emigrate. In 1937 he reached Argentina and re-established his antiquarian bookshop in Buenos Aires specializing in rare and fine books and manuscripts on South America. Very soon the Libreria Pablo Keins became a popular destination for bibliophiles, among them Jorge Luis Borges who was one of Pablo Keins closest friends. Besides being an antiquarian bookseller, Keins became widely known as a translator of Spanish literature and as a scholar in the Roman languages. Keins travelled to the United States and, after the end of World War II, to Europe. He was one of the first international dealers who exhibited at the Stuttgart Antiquarian Book Fair in the early 1960s.

Dr. phil. Pablo Keins studierte zunhst in Mchen bei Karl Vossler Romanistik. Nach seiner Promotion entschloss sich der Enkel von Leo Olschki und Cousin von Bernard M. Rosenthal zu einer Karriere im Antiquariat und absolvierte eine Ausbildung im Schweizer Buch- und Kunstantiquariat L' ART ANCIEN, zunhst in Lugano, ab 1929 dann in Zich. 1934 zog Keins nach Madrid und erfnete dort die LIBRERIA J. PABLO KEINS, die er vor allem durch die Erwerbung einer gron Bibliothek altspanischer Literatur zu Erfolg brachte.
Der Spanische Bgerkrieg zwang Pablo Keins zur Emigration; 1937 wanderte er nach Argentinien aus. In der Florida, einer Hauptstra von Buenos Aires, grdete er eine neue Firma, ein bibliophiles Antiquariat mit dem Schwerpunkt Samericana. Schon bald entwickelte sich die Libreria Pablo Keins zu einem kulturellen Zentrum der argentinischen Gesellschaft: Keins zlte den gron Schriftsteller Jorge Luis Borges zu seinen Freunden. Neben seiner erfolgreichen Tigkeit als Antiquar, die ihn nach Ende des Weltkriegs auch auf zahlreiche Einkaufsreisen nach Europa und auf Geschtsreisen zu us-amerikanischen Bibliotheken und Sammlern frte, fertigte er ersetzungen ins Spanische an und verfentlichte romanistische Studien.
Keins hielt sich zeitweise in Mchen auf; Teile seiner Bestde hat er auf der Antiquariatsmesse in Stuttgart ausgestellt und verkauft. Nach seinem Tod 1967 frte seine Witwe Gertrudis Keins geb. Lebermann das Gescht weiter; 1969 verfentlichte sie den Katalog Nr. 20.
