Antikvariat.net Relaunches: A New Chapter for Scandinavia’s Premier Antiquarian Book Platform

Since its inception in 1998, antikvariat.net has served as the central online marketplace for antiquarian and rare books offered by ILAB-affiliated booksellers across Scandinavia. The site has just undergone a significant relaunch.

Originally established through the joint initiative of the Swedish Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association (SVAF), the Danish Antiquarian Booksellers Association (ABF), and the Norwegian Antiquarian Booksellers Association (NABF), the platform quickly became an invaluable resource for collectors, librarians, and researchers looking for high-quality material from reputable, ILAB-affiliated dealers.

What began as one of the earliest cooperative digital catalogues in the international rare book trade has, over the years, grown into an impressive and dynamic database. Today, antikvariat.net, which is available in English, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, hosts 64 participating booksellers and offers access to over 1.4 million titles, with approximately 8,000 new items added each week. Sold books are removed regularly, ensuring that the site reflects current stock and active offerings. While it may be a substantial digital marketplace, antikvariat.net is not a bookshop itself: all enquiries, orders, and offers of books are handled directly by the participating ILAB-affiliated businesses.

Now, more than 25 years after its launch, antikvariat.net has undergone a major relaunch.

Why a Relaunch Was Needed

According to the President of the Swedish association, Simon Ström, who spoke with ILAB about the project, the decision to rebuild the site stemmed from the simple fact that the longstanding platform needed modernisation.

“Even though antikvariat.net has had loyal customers and satisfied sellers,” he explains, “the old site was in need of a thorough upgrade, both in terms of design and functionality. The goal has been to preserve the core idea of antikvariat.net and maintain its graphic profile, but update it into a site that feels more modern and is easier to use.”

The Scandinavian associations were united in the view that, while the platform had served the trade well, a new version would allow it to reach a wider audience, better support booksellers, and improve the experience for collectors worldwide.

What’s New: Functionality, Design and User Experience

The relaunched antikvariat.net remains faithful to its original mission: to bring together the stock of the foremost antiquarian booksellers in Scandinavia in a single, trustworthy online space. But the new version introduces a number of enhancements:

Improved search functions, offering both intuitive basic searches and powerful advanced filtering for more specialised enquiries.

A modernised design and clearer user interface, making browsing easier for newcomers and long-time users alike.

A streamlined payment system, giving customers a simpler and more transparent ordering experience.

A new editorial section, featuring articles and news from the antiquarian book world, strengthening the site’s position as an informational and cultural resource, not only a sales platform.

These upgrades aim not only to improve day-to-day usability, but also to increase the platform’s visibility in search engines and broaden its reach beyond the traditional rare book market.

Buy with Confidence from a Platform run by ILAB Booksellers

One of antikvariat.net’s strengths has always been its strict membership model. Only booksellers who belong to one of the Scandinavian national associations, and therefore to ILAB, are eligible to list books on the site.

“This means that customers can always trust that the books are accurately described and that all trade takes place according to ILAB’s rules,” Simon Ström emphasises. In an online environment where accuracy and authenticity are increasingly important, this commitment to quality and ethical conduct is central to the platform’s identity.

International Reach but Scandinavian Roots

Although the site is run by the Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish associations and naturally includes a strong Scandinavian component, its offerings go far beyond the region. Collectors will find books from all periods, languages, and geographic regions, ranging from medieval manuscripts to 20th-century paperbacks and everything in between.

For buyers wanting to explore the participating booksellers’ specialisations, full contact details and areas of expertise can be found through the site’s “Participants” section and through the association links provided.

At a time when online platforms play an ever-greater role in the rare book ecosystem, this collaborative effort by the Scandinavian ILAB associations ensures that antikvariat.net remains a trusted, modern, and valuable resource for the global collecting community and an investment in the future of the Scandinavian but also the international rare book trade.
