Tom Congalton

Brian Cassidy is a graduate (English/Writing) of Loyola College (Baltimore, MD) and holds a MFA (English/Poetry) from the University of Iowa Writers Workshop. He has been involved in the book business since 1994. He worked at independent bookstores like Tattered Cover. In 2004 he established his own company. From 2006 to 2009 Brian Cassidy maintained an open bookshop in Monterey. Today his business is located in Silver Spring, MD. Brian Cassidy exhibits at major antiquarian book fairs, is a regular contributor to The Standard, the newsletter of the Independent Online Bookseller's Association (IOBA). In 2008 he became a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA).

Brian Cassidy is specialized in: modern and contemporary literature, The Beats, poetry, popular culture, artists' books, the avant-garde in all its various guises (music to film, art to dance), small journals and magazines (especially those associated with the Mimeo Revolution), manuscripts and archives as well as vernacular, folk, and outsider books of all kinds.

Tom Congalton is one of the leading experts on Modern First Editions. He teaches at the Rare Book School and has written numerous articles on book collecting, rare books as investments and every imaginable book-related subject. He is Past President of the ABAA, a long-time member of the ILAB Committee and currently Vice-President of the League. He also serves on the Board of the Antiquarian Book Foundation.

After several years of collecting, scouting, and selling books Tom and Heidi Congalton issued their first Between the Covers catalogue in 1985. Today Between the Covers has one of the largest used and rare book inventories in the world with over 230,000 books, including over 150,000 first editions and over 13,000 signed books ranging from rare first editions worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to inexpensive reading copies. The books are offered to collectors of all ages, means, and tastes on the major international book fairs, in catalogues and in the internet.

In 1989 the artist and cartoonist Tom Bloom designed the distinctive look of Between the Covers. Since then he has illustrated nearly 200 catalogues for Between the Covers as well as the website www.betweenthecovers.com.
