Lovers of rare and collectable books in Sydney are in for a treat this year. The heritage Customs House at Circular Quay, only five minutes from the Sydney Opera House, will host the Sydney Rare Book Fair from Thursday November 5th to Saturday November 7th. Books, manuscripts, maps, prints, photographs and ephemera will be offered for sale by leading dealers from all over Australia.

The beautiful Barnet Long Room on the first floor will display fine and rare works in all fields. Early history and travels, fine literature, modern first editions, gorgeously illustrated books, magnificent bindings, beautiful and historical prints, maps, and photographs - all collectors’ tastes and interests will be catered for!

This is a great opportunity to meet the dealers and other collectors; to talk about your passion, or to be inspired by new ideas and areas of collecting. When many of us started collecting (Jane Austen and books about Georgian and Regency England), every Australian city had its second-hand bookshops, most with a few locked glass cabinets with some top-end 'rare’ books. These days, high rents and the internet have forced most shops to close. But thank heaven for book fairs. For three days you can indulge in the exciting thrill of the chase, ferret out that long-looked-for volume that fits perfectly into your collection; talk to other collectors, share the knowledge and the fellowship that abounds at book fairs, or lovingly handle something fine and rare in a totally new area of collecting.

The three day event in Sydney, in association with The Australian and New Zealand Association of Antiquarian Booksellers (ANZAAB) and officially opened on Thursday noon by ILAB/ANZAAB Patron of Honour David Malouf, is superbly located, convenient to all the transport and eateries and views one could want. Come and see what Sydney and the world of books, maps, prints, photographs and ephemera has to offer.

And even more: Cali Andersen and John Turner, both Sydney based bookbinders and book restorers, will be present to offer advice and discuss bookbindings and book repair requirements.
