The 56th Stuttgart Antiquarian Book Fair, organised by the German association Verband der Antiquare and under the auspices of ILAB, is the 2nd oldest antiquarian fair in Europe.
It is the most important event for antiquarians, autograph and print dealers in Germany and the first major event in the new year for the international antiquarian book trade and book collector.

Stuttgart has a rich tradition of publishing, printing and bookselling. Many publishing houses and long standing booksellers are based in the Stuttgart region. Universities such as the Media University Stuttgart (former Printing University Germany) are based here and build the foundation for this interest in the book and its origins.

After the first antiquarian book fair in London in 1958 (organised by the ABA) and later in 1960 the first fair in America in New York (organised by the ABAA), the Stuttgart dealers Fritz Eggert, Fritz Neidhardt und Dr. Frieder Kocher-Benzing launched this first fair for Germany in Stuttgart in 1962 and the fair has since confirmed its place year on year as the leading antiquarian book fair in Germany.

Over 72 antiquarian businesses have registered for the 2017 fair, dealers from Germany, the UK, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

First time exhibitors in 2017:

Robert Frew, London
L’Arengario Studio Bibliografico (Paolo und Bruno Tonini) from Gussago (Brescia), Italien
Galerie Joy, Boppard
Antiquariat Knöll, Lüneburg
Kunkel Fine Art, München
Ukiyo-e-Gallery (Hannspeter Kunz), Sigmaringen
Peter Fritzen, Trier

The fair organisers invite collectors and the trade to their opening event on the 23rd January in Stuttgart's Literaturhaus, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Germany's "Stiftung Buchkunst", the German fund for the Art and Design of the Book. Katharina Hesse, Managing Director of the Fund will give an introduction into the work of this prestigious German organisation that awards every year a prize for the "most beautiful book" in Germany.

(Literaturhaus Stuttgart, Monday 23rd Jan 2017, 8pm)

As every year, the organisers have put together a fantastic programme of events on subjects such as typography, art of the book as well as a guided tour for students of Stuttgart's Media University to open up our world of book collecting and bibliophilia to the younger generation!
