The UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated all over the world with a series of amazing events promoting the essence of reading and the culture of the book. On April 23, 2015, this day will be a special day for ILAB. In cooperation with UNESCO ILAB affiliates will organize Pop Up Book Fairs across the world. Starting the day in Australia, the fairs will open their doors in unusual places one after another from Australia to Asia, South Africa, Europe and the United States.

There are only three things you need to do to organize an ILAB Pop Up Fair:

Find a venue, set up some tables ...

Invite colleagues to participate ...

Invite your customers to come ...

... and get it started!

ILAB Pop-up fairs are great - you bring very little stock, just a few good books, put them out on a table and you are not exhibiting for long. The advantage is that they will be low or no cost for the dealers to take part in and will not require anything like the organization of the traditional fairs.

AUSTRALIA - JAPAN - RUSSIA – SOUTH AFRICA - HUNGARY - AUSTRIA - GERMANY - ITALY - SPAIN - NETHERLANDS - UNITED KINGDOM - USA ...

... and anywhere else in the world where you decide to be a part of it!

AUSTRALIA

SYDNEY: The first ILAB Pop Up Fair on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day 2015: The State Library of New South Wales is generously donating the use of a room for an ILAB Pop Up Fair, helping with publicity and mounting a special display of the first four folio editions of Shakespeare's works. The 23rd of April 2015 will be the 399th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, so this is a great tie-in.

DUNKELD: A typical Australian woolshed in Country Victoria will host another ILAB Pop Up Book Fair down under.

PERTH: More ANZAAB dealers will pop up with wonderful books, maps and prints in the world's most remote capital city in Western Australia.

JAPAN

TOKYO: The World Antiquarian Book Plaza is located in Tokyo’s city centre, five minutes away from the famous Ginza. The Plaza is a joint venture of Yushodo Ltd. and Michael Steinbach Rare Books and unites the exquisite offers of rare book dealers from Japan, the United States, Australia and Europe. On April 23, 2015, it will be an elegant venue for an ILAB Pop Up Book Fair, organized by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of Japan (ABAJ).

SOUTH AFRICA

CAPE TOWN: There are only a few ILAB affiliates in Africa, ABA member Paul Mills is one of them. He runs Clarke’s Africana & Books and has launched a platform established by rare book dealers especially for dealers: AntiquarianAuctions.com. Shortly before April 23, AntiquarianAuctions.com will start a benefit auction ending on UNESCO World Book & Copyright Day, coinciding with the ILAB Pop Up Fairs worldwide and donating the money to the ILAB/UNESCO fundraising to fight illiteracy in the Sub-Saharan regions.

GERMANY

MUNICH: Right in the city centre of the Bavarian capital in the rooms of the Kaufmanns Casino, where business men and women have been meeting for conferences and cocktails since 1832, antiquarian booksellers will show some of their most extraordinary books – with music, drinks and finger food.

FRANKFURT: Another ILAB Pop Up Book Fair is likely to take place at the Tresor am Römer, one of the most beautiful German antiquarian bookshops, next to the Goethe House and the art museums, and only a five minutes’ walk away from the international banking houses.

HAMBURG: The second largest city in Germany, among the eight largest cities in Europe and probably the German city with most antiquarian booksellers. Members of the German Antiquarian Booksellers’ Assocation (VDA) are looking for an attractive location to host an ILAB Pop Up Book Fair, either in the city centre or near the busy Hamburg harbour.

NETHERLANDS

GRONINGEN: Antiquariat Isis is the only ILAB affiliate and member of the Dutch Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association (NVvA) in that area, but instead of thinking "there is only one of us and nothing can be done", Lyseth Belt and Theo Butterhof, with the support of their local community, will be organising a rather special Pop Up celebration of UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day. Using the windows of the 40 shops in Folkingestraat they will create a unique Pop Up Book Street! Before the Second World War Folkingestraat was the heart of the Jewish community and the beautiful synagogue which today serves mainly a cultural function in the community has offered their exhibition space for the day. The synagogue's volunteers will also be helping Antiquariat Isis make this a very special ILAB Pop Up Book Fair.

AMSTERDAM and THE HAGUE: Further ILAB Pop Up Fairs will be held by members of the Dutch Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association (NVvA) in the Dutch “city of books” Amsterdam and in the capital The Hague.

ITALY

MILAN: Activities in Italy will start at the 3rd Milan International Antiquarian Book Fair with the announcement of a great public fundraising for the UNESCO Sub-Saharan projects. They will be followed up in the internet over the next weeks and will be ended with an ILAB Pop Up on 23 April, 2015, the UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day.

UNITED KINGDOM

LONDON: Located in the heart of London’s legal quarter, Middle Temple Library is part of the four ancient Inns of Court, just a few minutes from Fleet Street, The Strand and Embankment and overlooking the river Thames. Middle Temple was built between 1562 and 1573 and remains virtually unchanged to this day. The library which holds over 250,000 books, journals and law reports will be the perfect venue for an ILAB Pop Up Book Fair, organized by the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association (ABA) and showing the best rare books offered by antiquarian book dealers from all over the United Kingdom.

EDINBURGH and DUBLIN: Two more ILAB Pop Up Book Fairs are planned by ABA members in Scotland and Ireland.

UNITED STATES

NEW YORK: The city that never sleeps will host an ILAB Pop Up Book Fair. ABAA member Sunday Steinkircher is currently searching for an attractive venue.

NEWCASTLE / DELAWARE: Located in the historic colonial town of New Castle (founded 1651), next to the Delaware River, Oak Knoll Books will be an exciting location for an ILAB Pop Up Book Fair. The old Opera House, built by the Masons in 1879 with high ceilings and great views of the town and river will represent an America that many don’t know exist. There rare book dealers from Philadelphia will showcase books about books and many other amazing books, prints, manuscripts and ephemera on every imaginable subject.

PORTLAND / OREGON: There, on the west coast, will be "the end of the day" of the ILAB Pop Up Book Fairs on 23 April, 2015. Rare booksellers will pop up with an extraordinary selection of rare books in the US Bank Room at the Central Branch of the Multnomah County Library. ABAA member Elisabeth Burdon and Special Collections Librarian Jim Carmin are very enthusiastic about this project and hope to get good publicity.

FURTHER ILAB POP UP BOOK FAIRS ARE PLANNED IN:

• Denmark

• Russia

• Hungary (Budapest)

• Austria (Vienna)

• Spain (Zaragoza or Valencia)

• United States (Seattle, Chicago, Washington DC)

• and all across the World!

ILAB's participation in World Book and Copyright Day is a rare opportunity for ILAB affiliates to work together on the same project, on the same day, on a project which promotes the future of our trade while at the same time reaching out beyond the world of antiquarian books.
