ILAB POP UP BOOK FAIRS ALL AROUND THE WORLD
ON UNESCO WORLD BOOK & COPYRIGHT DAY, APRIL 23, 2015

The UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated all over the world with a series of amazing events promoting the essence of reading and the culture of the book. On April 23, 2015, this day will also be a special day for ILAB. In cooperation with UNESCO ILAB affiliates will organize Pop Up Book Fairs across the world. Starting the day in Australia, these wonderful bookish events will open their doors in unusual places one after another from Australia to Asia to Europe to the United States.

There are only three things you need to do to organize an ILAB Pop Up Fair on April 23, 2015:

Find a venue, set up some tables ...

Invite colleagues to participate ...

Invite your customers to come ...

... and get it started!

ILAB Pop-up fairs are great - you bring very little stock, just a few good books, put them out on a table and you are not exhibiting for long. The advantage is that they will be low or no cost for the dealers to take part in and will not require anything like the organization of the traditional fairs.

FILL A BOOKCASE TO FIGHT ILLITERACY!

To gain as much media coverage as possible the ILAB Pop Up Book Fairs will be more than just a fair, they will also be a venue for raising money to fight illiteracy throughout the world. All ILAB Pop Up Fairs start their day with an empty symbolic bookcase positioned at the entrance or in another very visible position. Colleagues and customers are offered the opportunity to "buy" a symbolic book to fill the bookcase and thereby donate money to support the UNESCO projects.

... and anywhere else in the world where you decide to be a part of it! "There has been an enthusiastic reaction to the ILAB proposal of celebrating World Book and Copyright Day on April 23, 2015 by holding inexpensive Pop Up Book Fairs across the world", says ILAB Committee member Sally Burdon. Akin to an installation in the world of art, these quick fairs may be held in busy unusual places or possibly more "traditional" venues like a library. The aim is that they are promoted to as wide an audience as possible. ILAB's participation in World Book and Copyright Day is a rare opportunity for ILAB affiliates to work together on the same project, on the same day, on a project which promotes the future of our trade while at the same time reaching out beyond the world of antiquarian books.

In many cases there will be more than one Pop Up Fair in the country. Here are just a few examples:

Australia

Important libraries: Three fairs are planned in Australia across two time zones. In Sydney The State Library of New South Wales is generously donating the use of a room for the Pop Up Fair, helping with publicity and mounting a special display of the first four folio editions of Shakespeare's works. The 23rd of April 2015 will be the 399th anniversary of Shakespeare's death so this is a great tie-in.

Down under: Other Pop Up Fairs will take place in a woolshed in country Victoria and in the world's most remote capital city Perth in Western Australia.

Germany

Munich: Right in the city centre of the Bavarian capital in the rooms of the Kaufmanns Casino, where business men and women have been meeting for conferences and cocktails since 1832, antiquarian booksellers will show some of their most extraordinary books. Other events are planned in Frankfurt or in Hamburg.

Netherlands

Antiquariat Isis in Groningen in the Netherlands is the only ILAB affiliate in their area, but instead of thinking "there is only one of us and nothing can be done", they are, with the support of their local community, celebrating World Book and Copyright Day. They will be organising a rather special Pop Up celebration of World Book and Copyright Day. Using the windows of the 40 shops in Folkingestraat they will create a unique Pop Up Book Street! Before the Second World War Folkingestraat was the heart of the Jewish community and the beautiful synagogue which today serves mainly a cultural function in the community has offered their exhibition space for the day. The synagogue's volunteers will also be helping Antiquariat Isis make this a very special rare book celebration. Thank you Lyseth Belt, Theo Butterhof and all in Folkingestraat!

This is just a taste of what is happening all around the world from Perth, Sydney, and an Australian woolshed, Munich in Germany, and Groningen in the Netherlands to New York, Newcastle, Delaware and Portland, Oregon in the United States to Italy, Hungary, Austria, Spain, the United Kingdom and other special places where special people will come to together to celebrate a very special day for all book lovers!
