Biographical Portal (ADB, NDB, HLS, ÖBL): The best online database for German speaking authors, scientists, artists, philosophers etc. Joint index of Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (ADB, Universal German Biography), Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz (HLS, Historical Dictionary of Switzerland), Neue Deutsche Biographie (NDB, New German Biography), and Österreichisches Biographisches Lexikon 1815-1950 (ÖBL, Austrian Dictionary of Biography 1815-1950). This cooperative project of the Bavarian State Library, the Historical Committee at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the Foundation Historical Dictionary of Switzerland started in June 2009.

Baltic Biographical Dictionaries

Everything about the history of the Baltic countries: The database comprises standard works like Blumfeldt’s “Bibliotheca Estoniae historica”, Brennsohn’s “Die Ärzte Kurlands (Livlands, Estlands) and several genealogical handbooks of the Baltic aristocracy from the Middles Ages up to the present. Created by the University Library of Tartu (Estland) and the Digital Collections of the BSB Munich.

Michael Holzmann und Hanns Bohatta, Deutsches Pseudonymen-Lexikon

„Holzmann/Bohatta, Pseudonyme“, as it is cited in book descriptions, was published in 1906. It is the best reference for pseudonyms used in German books until the 20th century.

DNB Dictionary of National Biography
