Amsterdam 2019 & The new Joint Dutch Catalogue
Amsterdam welcomes the book trade and booklover and collectors this weekend!
Whether you are a serious collector, a bibliophile or just an admirer of beautiful and exceptional books, prints, maps, manuscripts and other works on paper or parchment: in the first weekend of October you need to attend the 39th edition of the most prestigious antiquarian book fair of the Netherlands, which will be held at the Amsterdam Marriott Hotel.
On Sunday, Reinder Storm, curator of the library at the University of Amsterdam will be giving a guided tour, walking round the stands, talking about his personal favourites in the exhibitors’ collections, and sharing his knowledge. Especially recommended for those who feel they are not yet initiated in the wonderful world of antiquarian books, maps and related treasures.

2019 Joint Dutch Catalogue / Gezamenlijke Catalogus
The Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Antiquaren(NVvA), organiser of the fair, has also just published the 2019 Joint Dutch Catalogue / Gezamenlijke Catalogus with a foreword by Gert Jan Bestebreurtje, President of NVvA:
The Dutch Association of Antiquarian Book Dealers (NVvA) was established in 1935 under the inspirational leadership of Menno Hertzberger. Its goal was to ‘promote the trade in early books and prints’.
One of its first activities was the organization of the exhibition ‘The early book’ in Amsterdam in 1936, where the members could present and promote their antiquarian books and prints. T
he International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB), established at Copenhagen in 1948, held its First International Antiquarian Book Fair at Amsterdam in 1956, where the NVvA played a leading role. Many book fairs were to follow with a growing number of participants.
The board of the NVvA thanks the book fair committee, which once again this year took charge of the organization of the book fair at the Marriott Hotel. The Association takes pride in the increasing number of new members, who can now present themselves and their material in this year’s catalogue. So at the book fair you can meet not only the familiar national and international participants who have made their presence felt for many years, but also new participants from the Netherlands and a wide-ranging array of their foreign colleagues who are participating this year for the first time. A broad field of strong participants!
The First joint catalogue of Dutch antiquarian booksellers appeared in 1975, replaced in later years by the joint book fair catalogue. The latest catalogue now lies before you, offering a wide-ranging selection that covers every aspect of antiquarian books. From Mediaeval manuscripts and early printed books, atlases and travelogues, natural history, theology and history, to prints and vintage photographs. The quality standards are high, but even a collector just starting out with a modest budget can find interesting items to purchase in the present catalogue and at our book fair.
