Application Deadline for ILAB Congress Scholarships extended to 15 April 2020

Due to the COVID19- crisis, which affects many booksellers and has demanded booksellers over the last few weeks to focus entirely on the challenging situation in the business, we are aware that some booksellers might have not found the time and chance to apply for a scholarship.

The ILAB Committee has therefore extended the application for a scholarship to attend the 2020 Amsterdam ILAB Congress until 15th April.

ILAB thanks the booksellers who have submitted their applications.

The Dutch Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association (or, more properly, Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Antiquaren) has generously offered three scholarships for booksellers at early stages of their careers to attend the 2020 ILAB Amsterdam Congress events free of charge. The International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) will supplement the three scholarships with a stipend of 500.00 Euros (approximately U.S. $567.00) to defray part of the booksellers’ travel expenses.

For details of Congress events, which include library and museum visits, meals, and on October 2-3 the Fortieth Amsterdam International Antiquarian Book and Print Fair, please visit https://ilab2020.com/

Scholarship applications are open to full-time antiquarian booksellers in the first three years of their careers, whether as independent traders or employees. Applications should consist of an essay in either of ILAB’s two official languages, French or English, of not more than 300 words describing the applicant’s background, current (and, if appropriate, previous) employment, particular interests or specialities, and motivations for applying. A curriculum vitae may be added but is not required, and links to applicants’ bookselling presence on the internet will be appreciated.

The reviewing committee would like to know how applicants believe Congress attendance might further their business and personal goals, and also the direction applicants hope their careers will take over the next five to ten years. Finalists may be asked to supply two or three names of booksellers whom the Committee might contact for references, as well as evidence of the date of their business establishment such as V.A.T. or other tax registration.
