Update from the ILAB Mentoring Programme

In November 2016, the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers launched a free Mentoring Programme to help young or recently established booksellers throughout the world. The aim of the programme is to offer support and advice when it is most needed in the early days of a bookseller’s career.

Over 20 booksellers have so far benefitted from this unique programme.

Gregor Gumpert, bookseller in Germany, mentored by long-standing, experienced bookseller Sabine Keune, has supplied the following report which will encourage more young or new booksellers to follow suit.

ILAB International Mentoring Programme - Final Report

Since my interim report of January 3, 2018, Mrs. Keune and I have continued our discussions on an ongoing basis. In the first half of the mentoring period (July to December 2017), we spoke on the phone once a month, since then every two months; in November 2018, we met in person in Berlin and had a long conversation. Mrs. Keune's advice, her support in many areas and the exchange with her have been very valuable to me from the beginning of the mentoring.

Looking back, I can say that her support has contributed significantly to overcoming difficulties for beginners, gaining an orientation across the entire range of the antiquarian book trade and finally creating a framework for one's own business activities.

Over the last year and a half, we have continued to discuss the areas mentioned in my interim report in January 2018 - business practice issues, book description techniques, opportunities to specialise in specific subject areas, acquisitions and the purchase of books available for sale.

However, an important organizational point was added during this period: I have changed from a small entrepreneur to an entrepreneur subject to turnover tax. Mrs. Keune accompanied this step, which for me was associated with major changes (such as the familiarization with tax law issues and the adaptation of accounting and internal list keeping to the new circumstances), and provided me with information and advice.

A further focus of our discussions over the past one and a half years has been the discussion of very fundamental questions of today's antiquarian book trade: developments in the reading and collecting behaviour of customers, differences in the mail order / retail business models, specifics of Internet trade.

I have benefited greatly from Ms Keune's many years of experience and her assessment of the current situation. Beyond the end of mentoring, we want to continue our talks in a loose succession. For me, this is a great benefit, and I look forward to having a stimulating and perspective-rich exchange with Ms Keune in the future as well.

I would like to summarize that the Mentoring Programme of ILAB with the help of Mrs. Keunes has supported and encouraged me. Such support will only succeed if a real relationship of trust develops between the interlocutors, but that it develops is anything but a matter of course.

I hope that many prospective antiquarian booksellers will be able to have such trusting conversations within the framework of the Mentoring Programme and have such enriching and fruitful experiences as I had.

ILAB International Mentoring Programme - Abschlußbericht

Seit meinem Zwischenbericht vom 3. Januar 2018 haben Frau Keune und ich unsere Gespräche kontinuierlich fortgesetzt. Im ersten Halbjahr des Mentoring (Juli bis Dezember 2017) haben wir einmal im Monat, seitdem alle zwei Monate miteinander telefoniert; im November 2018 haben wir uns in Berlin persönlich getroffen und ein langes Gespräch geführt. Frau Keunes Ratschläge, ihre Hilfestellung in vielen Bereichen und der Austausch mit ihr sind für mich von Beginn des Mentorings an sehr wertvoll gewesen.

Im Rückblick kann ich sagen, daß ihre Unterstützung wesentlich dazu beigetragen hat, Anfängerschwierigkeiten zu bewältigen, eine Orientierung über die ganze Breite des Antiquariatsbuchhandels zu gewinnen und schließlich einen Rahmen für die eigene Geschäftstätigkeit zu schaffen.

Über die in meinem Zwischenbericht im Januar 2018 genannten Bereiche – Fragen der Geschäftspraxis, Technik der Buchbeschreibung, Möglichkeiten der Spezialisierung auf bestimmte Sachgebiete, Akquise und Ankauf angebotsfähiger Bücher – haben wir uns auch in den letzten anderthalb Jahren weiterhin ausgetauscht.

Ein wichtiger organisatorischer Punkt kam in dieser Zeitspanne jedoch hinzu: Vom Kleinunternehmer bin ich zum umsatzsteuerpflichtigen Unternehmer geworden. Frau Keune hat diesen Schritt, der für mich mit großen Veränderungen verbunden war (etwa der Einarbeitung in steuerrechtliche Fragen und der Anpassung von Rechnungslegung und innerbetrieblicher Listenführung an die neuen Gegebenheiten), begleitet und mir mit Informationen und Rat zur Seite gestanden.

Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt unserer Gespräche bildete in den letzten anderthalb Jahren die Erörterung ganz grundlegender Fragen des heutigen Antiquariatsbuchhandels: Entwicklungen im Lese- und Sammelverhalten der Kunden, Unterschiede der Geschäftsmodelle Versandhandel / Ladengeschäft, Spezifika des Internet-Handels.

Von Frau Keunes langjähriger Erfahrung und ihrer Einschätzung der heutigen Situation habe ich sehr profitiert. Über das Ende des Mentorings hinaus wollen wir unsere Gespräche in lockerer Folge weiterführen. Für mich ist dies ein großer Gewinn, und ich freue mich darauf, mit Frau Keune auch in Zukunft einen anregenden und perspektivenreichen Austausch zu haben.

Am Ende des bisherigen Weges möchte ich zusammenfassend sagen, daß das Mentoring Programme der ILAB in der Person Frau Keunes mich entscheidend unterstützt und gefördert hat. Eine solche Unterstützung gelingt wohl nur dann, wenn sich zwischen den Gesprächspartnern ein wirkliches Vertrauensverhältnis entwickelt; daß es sich aber entwickelt, ist alles andere als selbstverständlich.

Ich wünsche vielen angehenden Antiquaren, daß sie im Rahmen des Mentoring Programme so vertrauensvolle Gespräche führen und so bereichernde und fruchtbare Erfahrungen machen können wie ich selbst.
