LONDON INTERNATIONAL ANTIQUARIAN BOOK FAIR

26-28 MAY 2016

HOLD HISTORY IN YOUR HANDS - From May 26 to 28 the halls of Olympia will once again present an unparalleled array of literary material at the London International Antiquarian Book Fair. Now in its 59th year, this major three-day event is one of the largest and most prestigious antiquarian book fairs in the world, showcasing rare, unique and unusual items from 180 leading UK and international dealers.

THE BIRTH OF THE GOTHIC: Two Centuries of Frankenstein, Vampires & Byronic Darkness - The Fair's theme will be celebrating the year in which Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Polydori's The Vampyre were conceived on a stormy night at the Villa Diodati. Exhibitors are bringing related books, prints, and other items. Special tours and snacks in the cafe, as well as a historic film, will be some of the highlights in a series of events, lectures and exhibitions during the Fair.

AMSTERDAM INTERNATIONAL ANTIQUARIAN BOOK FAIR

1-2 OCTOBER 2016

The Dutch Antiquarian Booksellers' Association (NVvA) is pleased to announce the 36th Amsterdam International Antiquarian Book Fair to be held on 1st and 2nd October 2016 in the heart of the book-loving city of Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Marriott Hotel has space for 60 ILAB associated antiquarian booksellers to participate. This spectacular location in the centre of Amsterdam is a stone's throw away from the recently reopened Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. The Amsterdam Book Fair is an eminently suitable occasion for Dutch and foreign antiquarian booksellers to meet and to do business with each other. An extra incentive for our overseas colleagues is the fact that the Fair will be held only a week after the ILAB Congress and International Antiquarian Book Fair in Budapest.

COLLECTING CHILDREN'S BOOKS

THE LEGACY OF LUDWIG BEMELMANS

For many small children outside of Europe, their first ideas of Paris come from a children's book, and for them, the heart of the city is a vine-covered old house full of little girls in yellow dresses, the smallest and most important being Madeline. The man behind the first seven Madeline books (the series has since been picked up by his grandson) was Ludwig Bemelmans. Though he published over forty-six books in his lifetime and posthumously, it is for Madeline that he is most fondly remembered.
