«Che passione sfogliare i secoli»
“Umberto Pregliasco non ha paura delle parole. Se deve spiegare cos' è un libraio antiquario ne allinea tre: passione, orgoglio, competenza. Ma non si nasconde niente: la diffidenza intorno alla figura del mercante, le lusinghe e le fragili leggi dei prezzi. «Ci sono episodi mitici di truffe sulla bibliofilia - racconta -. A un francese appassionato di autografi sono arrivati a vendere una lettera di Giuda a Gesù. Era il 1830». Figlio e nipote di una famiglia di librai torinesi dal 1912, Umberto Pregliasco è presidente da sei anni dell' Alai, l' associazione che riunisce i librai antiquari italiani. Suo padre Arturo era stato presidente dal 1970 al 1976. Suo nonno Lorenzo era stato tra i fondatori nel 1947. A conclusione del suo mandato porta a Bologna - in occasione di Artelibro, la più importante rassegna sul libro d' arte in Italia, dal 24 al 26 settembre - il congresso internazionale degli antiquari. Un appuntamento che mancava da 25 anni con i rappresentanti di duemila librerie antiquarie sparse in 22 paesi. Dalle più antiche, la prima associazione nasce in Inghilterra nel 1906, alle più recenti dalla Russia e dalla Cina, che stanno cambiando la geografia di questo mondo. Orgoglio e competenza. «Non si può fare questo mestiere a livello meramente mercantile. Lo studio quotidiano sui libri - aggiunge - è lo stesso per un volume da 100 euro e per uno da 100.000. Lo stesso concetto di pezzo unico è cambiato. Ogni esemplare ha la sua storia: bastano una firma, un commento, una dedica, una rilegatura. Per non parlare del ' 400/' 500 quando ogni copia tirata al torchio pagina per pagina, presenta varianti tipografiche, correzioni, ripensamenti» ...”

Visiting fine books - Bologna belies those who predict the demise of the book, by BN Uniyal
At Bologna’s city centre, Piazza de Nettuno, we are queuing up early one September morning for the coach that is to take us to Ravenna for a day trip. Just then someone from behind sends a relay mail up the queue for me. It is an A4 size sheet of paper folded in the middle and stapled at the top. I unfold the sheet. A review of Geoffrey Nunberg’s The Future of the Book downloaded from the net opens out. “The death of the book has been duly announced,” says the review, “and with it the end of brick-and-mortar libraries…” I turn back to see if I can spot the bookseller who sent up the review. There is a smiling face deep down the line with a pair of eyes peering at me rather mischievously. The irony of the situation is not lost on me. Here is a California University futurist announcing the death of the book just when this large group of antiquarian booksellers is setting out on a tour of antiquarian libraries in heartland Renaissance.

39th Annual ILAB Conference
From 20th to 26th September more than 200 ILAB affiliates from all over Europe, the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan and China meet in Bologna (Italy) for their 39th Congress.
Arnoud Gerits neuer ILAB-Präsident
Der niederländische Antiquar Arnoud Gerits ist in Bologna zum neuen Präsidenten der International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) gewählt worden. Ungarischer Verband neues Mitglied der ILAB.

Neuer ILAB-Präsident gewählt
Im Rahmen des 39. ILAB-Kongresses und der 23. Internationalen Antiquarischen Büchermesse in Bologna wurde der niederländische Antiquar Arnoud Gerits einstimmig zum neuen Präsidenten der International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) gewählt. Er folgt Adrian Harrington nach, der das Amt von 2008 bis 2010 inne hatte.
