What happens when authors revisit their masterpieces?

But when you buy your unicorn and take it home to your little smallholding, then your neighbours will fall over with astonishment. That’s what’s going to happen with these books. After a year or two passes, each one is going to look like a little marvel and the prices will seem reasonable, even cheap, in retrospect.”

J.K. Rowling is one the authors who, on Rick Gekoski’s invitation, revisited and annotated the first edition of one of their books. The list of authors is impressive: it includes 16 Booker Prize winners, two Nobel laureates and winners of other renowned literary awards: Julian Barnes, Seamus Heaney, Tom Stoppard, Ian McEwan, Margaret Atwood, Kazuo Ishiguro, Joanna Trollope, Nick Hornby, Frederick Forsyth, Colm Toíbín, Helen Fielding, Nadine Gordimer, Alexander McCall Smith, and many more.

All these very special books, which are listed here, will be sold 21st May 2013 in a Charity Auction at Sotheby’s in aid of the English PEN.
