The Charlotte M. Smith Collection, a gift to the University of Iowa Libraries in 1996, numbers 4.000 titles. The books are less than 3" tall or wide - and most are smaller in both dimensions. Principally collected by Charlotte M. Smith (1919-2002) the books range in date from the 17th century to the present.

UNT Libraries Digital Collections

4000 Years of Miniature Books IU Lilly Library Exhibition

"Miniature books have delighted readers for centuries." Popular because they were easily carried or concealed, these historic books range from tiny "Thumb Bibles" to illustrated nursery rhymes. The earliest piece of block printing to which an accurate date can be ascribed - a Japanese wooden block print from about 770 AD - is a miniature scroll and part of the Lilly Library's collections.
