Allen Stypeck

"The Best Used Bookstore" (Washingtonian Magazine): Allen Stypeck graduated in 1972 from the American University School of Government and International Service in Washington, D.C. Only a year later he founded Second Story Books in 1973. Since then it has grown from a 5,000 book store on the second floor in Washington, DC to one of the largest used and rare bookshops in the world. Two locations in the Washington metropolitan area house over a million books in all categories as well as collectible manuscripts, maps, ephemera, prints and posters.

From 1997 to 2009, Allen Stypeck co-hosted the popular radio show, THE BOOK GUYS, in which he answered callers’ book-related questions every week coast-to-coast on public radio.

He lectures on collecting books and assessing their value at institutions such as the Library of Congress or the Smithsonian Institution, and is member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America (ABAA), the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB), the American Booksellers Association (ABA), the Universal Autograph Collector's Club (UACC), the International Autograph Collector’s Club (IACC) and The Manuscript Society.
