Map of Emanuel von Baeyer Ltd

Emanuel von Baeyer London was founded in 1998 and has since been firmly established as a leading representative of the younger generation of old master dealers. Emanuel von Baeyer deals principally in fine European drawings, prints and paintings from the fifteenth through the twentieth century. We also handle select postwar and contemporary art, showing interest in both established and emerging artists.

Emanuel von Baeyer works with a broad range of paintings, drawings and prints all of which are of the highest quality and often rare and distinguished examples. Areas of particular interest are: the School of Fontainebleau, 17th and 18th century Italian prints, the Prague court of Rudolph II and his artistic circle and German 17th century art. Interest in this fuelled work on the Expressive Baroque period, a Central-European movement of the first half of the 18th century, here focussing on prints and drawings and paintings. Recently French 17th and 18th century art have been a central focus, as well as British art from the same period. German 19th century culture is also a fascinating area as it was constantly evolving and embracing movements such as early Romanticism, the Nazarenes, Biedermeier and Naturalism. Well-known names from these areas are represented alongside contemporaneous works from the French Romantics, Impressionists and fin-de-siècle artists.

Emanuel von Baeyer regularly participates in the London Original Print Fair, Frieze Masters London, Master Drawings Week in London and New York, IFPDA Print Fair New York, Antiquarian Booksellers Associations (ABA), TEFAF, Maastricht and Stuttgarter Antiquariatsmesse. He is also a member of the International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB).

As an extension of Emanuel von Baeyer Londons regular activities, Emanuel von Baeyer Cabinet was launched in 2010. It serves as a platform for online exhibitions, profiling different aspects of our extensive inventory. With each exhibition focused around a singular artist, group show or theme, the new Cabinet website stages two simultaneous online exhibitions: First Floor and Second Floor. Our aim is that these different exhibitions highlight the breadth of our interests, and further enable us to experiment with unexplored artistic materials and introduce new and overlooked artists of current significance. In keeping with these objectives, works on display range from old master to contemporary prints and drawings. It also features photographs, archive material, writings, and ephemera.

Catalogues

2019 - 'Illuminated. Prints 1480 - 1600'

This catalogue focuses on black and white prints and their role as a support. It examines samples of works ranging from the very beginnings of the hand-colouring of early printed books before 1500 to the so-called transition copies that begin to modify prints towards the end of the 16th century.

This catalogue is preceded by a small number of publications addressing our topic of illuminated and hand-coloured manuscripts: Gremlin who, in 1993 was the first to fully address the topic, and Dackerman, whose ground-breaking book from 2002 offers an overview until 1600, as well as Truusje Goedings, whose book from 2015 surveys 250 years. Goedings has made a substantial contribution on the maker of the prayer books, published here for the first time, and her discovery adds much to the understanding in this field that is included in our catalogue.
