CAT 255 19th century Indonesia

Gert Jan Bestebreurtje

We offer a representation of the Dutch East Indies seen through 19th century eyes, told in words and illustrated by contemporaries. After the fall of the VOC, the Dutch East Indies became a real colony of the Netherlands for the first time. From that moment on, travelers set out to explore the interior of Java, Sumatra and the outer regions by naturalists, preachers, missionaries, linguists, civil servants, military personnel, fortune seekers, artists and tourists. Several of them wrote a report of their journey or stay in the Indies.
The great inspiration for a renewed interest in the Dutch East Indies was Thomas Stamford Raffles with his book History of Java from 1817.
