Dome at dusk: Imaginary voyages, State Library Victoria

decoration06 Sept. 2018

The great European sea voyages of the 17th and 18th centuries ushered in a publishing boom, as entrepreneurial printers raced to issue stories of new lands to an eager public. Alongside reports of real discoveries, publishers fostered a new popular genre of satirical travel literature known as the ‘imaginary voyage’, such as Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels.

Join curator Anna Welch to follow the real and imagined fate of shipwrecked sailors, strange lands, and even stranger beings.
