Identifying characteristics
The current shelfmark is written in pencil in the top right-hand corner of the front paste-down or if that is not suitable (e.g. if it’s marbled paper) in the corresponding position of the verso of the first front free endpaper. Books other than those so described may have the earlier Stall/Shelf/Book shelfmark, the Scots College in Paris bookplate, or the crude stamped cross. Any of the four books may also have an even earlier shelfmark, written in ink, of the form “N–III–9”, and/or an oval ink stamp (usually black) reading “Eastern District” (usually on the title page)
