À Paris: Food, Wine, and Rare Books!

Publié le 30 Avril 2014
This month marked the 100th anniversary of Syndicat Nationale de la Librairie Ancienne et Moderne, better known to the rare book world as SLAM. In conjunction with this momentous occasion, SLAM not only hosted the International Antiquarian Book Fair at Paris' Grand Palais but also followed this by coordinating the 2014 ILAB Congress, April 13 to 16, whereat over 100 colleagues from around the globe gathered to celebrate not only their vocation, but also their avocation. Both the book fair and the Congress were fantastic events where numerous bibliophilic treasures were seen by all that attended. These bookish wonders aside, the collegiality alone would have made the trip worthwhile – though the exceptional food and wine cannot be discounted! In honor of our Parisian adventure, Tavistock Books is pleased to present a list of books connected to France and French. Should you have a question about any item, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Weimar, September 2011 - ILAB Presidents' Meeting

On Saturday we start to earn our keep. A day-long meeting of the presidents, with the ILAB Committee and its tireless staff. Here's not the place for a full report, but we discussed, among many other things, the circuit of international book fairs, the major upcoming events in Switzerland (2012) and France (2014), the sharing of new ideas to promote our activities, the preparation of an international guide to book-collecting in its various forms, the ever-expanding ILAB website, the international directory of members, and the wider geographical spread of associated booksellers around the world. All in all, a highly congenial and really rather impressive example of international co-operation.

Europeana - A project by the European Commission against the 'Dark Age' of private digitalization

Rare Books in the Press - Book Collecting Basics: Ditch the Dust Jacket?

"If you've ever purchased a hardcover book, you're probably familiar with the dust jacket or, depending on which side of the pond you are, the dust-wrapper. Indeed, they've been around since the 1820's! These paper coverings are designed to protect a book's cloth cover as the book travels from the publisher to your bookshelf. Some readers remove their dust jackets—or even use them as bookmarks! But when it comes to rare books or collectible book, dust jackets should be treated with significant care as they often add significant value to the book."

No Rare Books, Just Whisky – Shackleton's Whisky Discovered in the Antarctic

They have been frozen for more than 100 years. Sir Ernest H. Shackleton had stored them in his hut in the Antarctic during his 1908 Antarctic expedition, before the famous explorer returned to Great Britain: five cases filled with bottles of whisky and brandy. The hut was restored in 2006 by the Antarctic Heritage Trust who found the cases. Now the Scotch is going to be thawed at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch (New Zealand). Let's see whether the stuff is still drinkable …

ILAB Internships – Out of the Classroom, into the World

Maria Rodionova: Australia 2014 (Part 2) - So now I should tell you about the last two weeks that I spent in Australia. Basically, during those two weeks I worked with Paul Feain at his auction house - Sydney Rare Book Auctions - and at Cornstalk Bookshop. There I had an opportunity to consider the huge number of completely different books. Especially I was surprised to find a few Russian books. Some of them were in English, which was absolutely no surprise to find them there. Others were in Russian and about Russia and I was very pleased and astonished about that. Two wonderful girls who worked with Paul, Krista and Olivia, showed me some very interesting things. For example, the way they work with eBay. Of course, I knew how to operate this site, but in Australia I learned for the first time how useful it is when you work with antique books and how easy it is to handle it. It is amazing, but sometimes even the obvious can be an eye-opener. All in all, I can say with confidence that I had many pleasant and useful minutes in Paul's shop, which unfortunately has already closed down, and aside from the fact that I learned some interesting things about books, I got great pleasure staying there.
