Leonardo da Vinci was a tireless and inquisitive reader. He owned more than 200 books about science and technology as well as literary and religious topics. An exhibition organized by the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Berlin State Library at the Museo Galileo in Florence sheds new light on the intellectual cosmos of the artist, engineer, and philosopher, who remains as fascinating as ever 500 years after his death.

Today marks the 1st International Provenance Research Day with more than 60 cultural institutions in Germany, Great Britain, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland organizing large number of symposiums and workshops at museums, archives and libraries.  Coinciding with this important initiative, ILAB launches the videos of the New York Provenance Symposium.

Larry McMurtry, a Collected Book Collector

Although renowned as a novelist and screenwriter, Pulitzer Prize-winner Larry McMurtry is above all a passionate book collector. A bookseller for over fifty years, McMurtry began writing as a way to fund his book purchases. He has acquired quite a few - his own personal collection contains over thirty thousand volumes and his bookstore holds another 200,000. He says, "The tradition I was born into was essentially nomadic, a herdsmen tradition, following animals across the earth. The bookshops are a form of ranching; instead of herding cattle, I herd books."

Law Books: History & Connoisseurship - Summer Course, Rare Book School at the University of Virginia

Greetings from Rare Book School at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia! This summer Rare Book School is excited to offer a course designed specifically for law librarians and scholars and collectors interested in law books. Law Books: History & Connoisseurship surveys printed and manuscript legal materials in Anglo-American, European, and Latin American Law. Taught by Mike Widener, Rare Book Librarian at the Lillian Goldman Law Library, Yale Law School, this course introduces students to legal bibliography and curation and instructs students on how focused, useful collections of law books are built. Students will explore the production and distribution of law books, the philosophy and techniques of collecting, and will develop bibliographical tools through hands-on laboratory sessions. This course will be taught in New Haven, Connecticut during the week of July 28–August 1.
