Books Round Midnight

On 23 April 2016, the Stockholm Culture Night rolls out the purple carpet to celebrate art, music, dance and literature throughout the Swedish capital. Visitors will lose themselves in breathtaking performances and exhibitions held all night at public places, museums and institutions. As part of this awesome series of events and while the amazing great chain of ILAB Pop Up Fairs will span around the world on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day the Swedish booksellers will pop up at the Royal Swedish Academy of Art to present treasures from the history of printing in Sweden and - as their colleagues from Australia to Asia, Africa, Europe and the America - to raise money for UNESCO' literacy projects in South Sudan.

Dictionaries - Surveying the Territory

No one has ever compiled a complete catalogue of all of the world's reference books, and the task won't be easy. Not all the world's libraries have been catalogued; not all the library catalogues are available in electronic form; not all the electronic catalogues can be searched from a central location. And sometimes the query is too much for the catalogue. The Library of Congress Online Catalog, when asked to display all its holdings with the word dictionary in the title, comes back with an error message: "Your search retrieved more records than can be displayed. Only the first 10,000 will be shown." The same thing happens when you search for encyclopedia.

When Wallace Stevens hit Ernest Hemingway in Key West

October 2 is the birthday of poet Wallace Stevens (1879), who won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1955 for his Collected Poems. For many years, he was frequent visitor to Key West, beginning in 1922. In 1936, he encountered Ernest Hemingway there, and thereby hangs a tale.
