decoration05 April 2011

The Bavarian State Library owns an enormous collection of precious manuscripts, among them the formidable number of 5000 manuscripts from North Africa and the Middle East. With 171 manuscripts in Ge'ez and Amharic the Ethiopian collection is the second largest one in Germany. A large number of important works of classic Ethiopian literature is represented among the Ethiopian holdings in the Bavarian State Library: Translations of apocryphal texts of the Bible (Book of Henoch), hymns, prayers, the famous Fetha naga't, astronomic texts as well as more than fifty magic scrolls representing the popular belief of the Ethiopian Christians. The lecture will give an overview of the Ethiopian collection.
