Very Like a Whale

decoration16 Oct. 2012|06 Jan. 2013

How often will you see a mastodon's tooth at the Folger? What about a shield made from hippopotamus skin? These and other natural history specimens will be on view in the upcoming exhibition. Is anything what it seems? That is the question posed by "Very Like a Whale." By juxtaposing books and manuscripts from the Folger collection with natural history objects, Purcell’s photographs, and passages from Shakespeare and other early-modern thinkers, this exhibition explores the interplay between the real world and the world of the Renaissance imagination.
