Stimmen aus dem Wüstensand. Briefkultur im griechisch-römischen Ägypten

decoration10 June 2010|15 Jan. 2011

The exhibition shows private letters on papyrus from ancient Egypt. These most fascinating historical documents were written by “ordinary” people about their “ordinary” life, which is normally not mentioned in ancient literary sources. Part of the exhibition are also official correspondences which give insight into ancient economics and administration, among them many letters written in Arabic or Coptic languages to demonstrate the multilingual culture of ancient Egypt from the 300 BC to 900 AD.
