National Book Auctions - Books and Ephemera

decoration24 July 2011

This catalog features an assortment of important literature, historical titles and collectible children’s books.  Included throughout is a handsome, large personal collection of fancy binding leather books and a decorative collection of Scandanavian antique titles. Additionally, this catalog includes an assortment of antique and vintage magazines, including science fiction, “Yachting Magazine,” early “Saturday Evening Post” magazines, and comic books, including a 1970’s collection of “Planet of the Apes” published by Marvel Comics.Throughout this catalog are volumes by noted author and illustrator, Lois Lenski, many of which are signed by the author.  Included are several of Lenksi’s well-known regional novels, including the Newberry Medal award-winning “Strawberry Girl,” and “Blue Ridge Billy.”  This catalog also features a French children’s alphabet book published in Germany during the mid-Nineteenth Century, “Nouveau Syllabaire,” containing handsome, hand-tinted illustrations of each letter of the alphabet. Also offered are important printings of classic literary works, including a 1902 limited edition reprint of William Shakespeare First Folio, hand-signed by Sidney Lee.  Other important titles include a first edition of Captain David Porter’s “Journal of a Cruise Made to the Pacific Ocean” printed in 1815 and the 1802 three-volume set of “The Adventures of Gil Blas.” Featured among the historical titles is an original copy of Frank Leslie’s elephant folio of the “Pictorial History of the War of 1861,” lavishly illustrated with engravings of maps, Civil War battle scenes and naval battles, and a color map.  Also featured are two works from John Ruskin, including an author-signed, three-volume set of “The Stones of Venice” published in 1873-74, and other histories of the United States and Europe. Finally, this catalog includes a collection of full leather, fancily bound books in a range of rich colors.  The books are housed in quality leather with desirable features such as gilt tooling, raised bands, deep pattern blind-stamp tooling to the boards, and were executed with a high degree of competence.  The books have the appearance one would expect of important seventeenth or eighteenth century bindings, when they were new.  Also included is a collection of handsomely bound Scandinavian language books, most with full or partial leather bindings.  The majority of the books in this collection are written in Swedish and Danish.
