National Book Auctions - Book, Art and Ephemera Auction – Basquiat, Popova, Cuba, Waterford, etc.

decoration29 June 2014
This catalog features rare, antique and decorative books as well as select additions of ephemera and artwork.  The artwork is led by two original paintings credited to Jean-Michel Basquiat and Lyubov Popova.  Highlighted is our third session from an impressive collection of Civil War and American West writings, along with a large collection of author-signed modern fiction.

Antique and rare books in this catalog feature numerous titles.  Among the earliest examples are the Thomas Guarin imprints of “Biblia Sacra Veteris et Novi Testamenti Secundum Editionem Vulgatam,” published over 1590 and 1591 in vellum with woodcuts and fold-out maps by Tobias Stimmer, the 1591 first edition of Campana’s “Arbori delle Famiglie Regali di Spagna,” and the 1614 printing of Gazet’s “L'Histoire Ecclesiastique du Pays-Bas.”  Other scarce titles include special editions and antique sets such as a copy of “Expedicion y Desembarco del ‘Granma’,” signed by Fidel Castro, a 1903 first state of Jack London’s “The Call of the Wild,” with a very rare original prospectus laid-in, and the 1895 first edition of Paul Lawrence Dunbar’s “Majors and Minors Poems.”  Additional antique and collectible titles relate to the history of Pennsylvania, Quakers, travel & polar exploration, architecture, music, art history, textiles & costume, theology and other scholarly studies.
