decoration06 July 2015|10 July 2015

This course is designed to give students as understanding of early printed books, by combining theory with practice. It will look at the production of books in the fifteenth century from the printer’s point of view. Students will look at early printed editions in Senate House Library, and examine in detail some individual leaves. They will have practical experience of setting type and printing on a wooden handpress, at St Bride’s Print Workshop. They will learn how technical limitations of working with metal type influenced the design of the printed page, and gain an understanding of the printers’ thinking when designing and printing a book.
