London Rare Books School, Week 2 - Latin Palaeography: A Practical Course

decoration06 July 2015|10 July 2015
This course will provide intensive training for practical transcription skills, on the principle that the best way to learn how to read medieval manuscripts is to keep practising, with the tutor giving tips on how to approach new scripts and how to resolve difficulties.  Some notions of history of scripts will be introduced, but the main focus will be the actual deciphering of passages in different scripts.  The course will introduce the main scripts used in Britain from 600 to 1500, many of which were also used in continental Europe.  The tips and techniques learnt will be applicable to other scripts.  During a site visit to the Wellcome Library, there will be an opportunity to see real manuscripts illustrating many of the scripts.
