decoration02 March 2015|12 June 2015
Renowned conservation scientist Robert Feller is a consummate bibliophile who donated nearly 2,500 volumes on painting, printmaking, sculpture, and color science to the National Gallery of Art. The collection, built up by Robert Feller and his wife Ruth M. Johnston Feller focuses on the science and technology of color, the history and manufacture of paints, varnishes and textiles along with treatises on painting, printmaking and sculpture. Over 200 of these books are rare 17th to 19th century volumes including highlights such as Fellner's notebook on samples taken in Florence where he worked with conservators responding to the flood of 1966, several examples of hand painted color samples, and series of several editions of important artist manuals and instruction books.
