Before the King James Bible

decoration01 Nov. 2011|31 Dec. 2011

Including the first Arabic Bible with 149 woodcuts by Tempesta and 30 Bibles and biblical texts. Begun in 1604 and completed in 1611, the King James or Authorized Version of the Bible celebrates its 400th year anniversary in 2011.  Called “the book that changed the world,” the King James Bible became a unifying text for the entire English-speaking world.  The epic-making task of translation was undertaken by around 50 scholars, who revised existing English translations with reference to the original Hebrew, Greek and Latin.  Les Enluminures’ exhibition explores the widening access to the Bible that led eventually to the King James Bible through an examination of about 30 manuscripts and books.
