Jews and the Americas: 165 Years of Collecting Judaica Americana at the John Carter Brown Library

decoration21 Oct. 2010|28 Feb. 2011

The acquisition of Judaica with an American connection was integral to John Carter Brown’s collecting interest as defined in 1846: every book relating to North and South America printed before 1801. But it was in the 1990s that the Library would begin to assess the separate character of this special aggregation of books within the greater collection. The exhibition, prepared by Dennis Landis, shows books from the collection and is divided into different sections: 1. Jews and the dissemination of geographical knowledge. 2. Jewish Indians. The ten lost tribes of Israel. 3. From intolerance to emancipation. 4. Jews of America.
