Libraries are the repositories of our knowledge and culture. The ancient rooms where stones with hieroglyphics and papyrus rolls were kept belong to the oldest types of buildings. The most important architects devoted themselves to their construction, and library buildings play an outstanding role in the history of architecture. The exhibition at the Pinakothek der Moderne gives many insights into the incredibly rich history of ideal, private, national, lost, drawn or imaginary libraries. On show are rare books, drawings, prints, and manuscripts from the Foundation Werner Oechslin as well as numerous plans, photographies and models by famous architects from Michelangelo, Étienne-Louis Boullée, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Gunnar Asplund, Alvar Aalto, Louis Kahn to Hans Scharoun, Dominique Perrault and Max Dudler.
