Biblias en la Biblioteca Lázaro Galdiano - Bibles in the Lazaro Galdiano Library

decoration28 May 2014|15 Sept. 2014

The exhibition celebrates the 5th centenary of the publication of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible – the first Bible with parallel translations in many languages published in a six-volume-set by the Complutense University and initiated and financed by Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros (1436-1517). The Cardinal invited the religious scholars of that time, including Hernán Núñez, to work on the ambitious task of compiling a massive and complete polyglot "to revive the languishing study of the Sacred Scriptures." The work on that ambitious project started in 1502 and continued over fifteen years. Finally, the New Testament was completed and printed in 1514, the Old Testament followed in the year 1517.

In its first part the exhibition documents the complex process of collecting and compiling the original manuscripts and codices along with the most important editions of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible (Complutense, Antwerp and other editions) and Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic as well as Latin translations. The second part presents notable manuscripts and books collected by José Lázaro, including unique copies of Bible translations and illustrated Bible editions.

A fully illustrated catalogue is available online. (Pictures: Lázaro Galdiano Foundation)
