UOL Society of Bibliophiles - Encourage people to collect books! Events for 2017 announced

In an attempt to knock the Kindle off its throne, a new society was set up in October 2016 by a teacher/Ph.D. researcher from North London in the hope that it will 'make books sexy again'. In an age where the overwhelming majority of us access print culture through electronic devices, we run the risk of losing a wealth of information that can only be discerned from the material text. And whilst the Kindle may be a backpacker's best friend, a book's material form provides us with an insight into its history.2017 Events have just been announced.

And whilst the Kindle may be a backpacker’s best friend, a book’s material form provides us with an insight into its history.

The new Society of Bibliophiles is hosted by the University of London and sponsored by Auction House stalwarts, Bonhams, as well as the ABA (Antiquarian Booksellers Assocations, affiliated to International League of Antiquarian Booksellers) and Maggs Bros Books. Over the course of the year they will run a programme of events that will target young people in an attempt to persuade them to fall back in love with the material book.

The next events for 2017 have just been announced:

VISIT TO LAMBETH PALACE LIBRARY
16th February 2017
6 - 7.30pm

VISIT TO THE INSTITUTE OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH

6.30 - 8pm

LONDON RARE BOOKS WEEK LECTURE & RECEPTION

The society is open to all, not just university students, and aims to provide an opportunity for those who are interested book-collecting – whether it’s rare books, comics, or classic Penguins – to meet up with like-minded people..

The society aims to:

Promote all aspects of books, book-collecting and material texts.
To raise awareness and improve knowledge of bibliophilia.
To encourage people to collect books.

Meetings will be held monthly and a programme of events will run throughout the year, including round table discussions, lectures by guest speakers and collection visits.
