ILAB PRESIDENT'S WELCOME - ILAB POP UP FAIRS ON UNESCO WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY 2016

This Saturday, April 23rd, is a special day for ILAB. It is World Book and Copyright Day and for the second year ILAB is proud to work with UNESCO to promote books, reading and literacy across the world. Again this year we have many events taking place - Pop Up Book Fairs, appraisals, a book launch, talks, a marathon reading session, a cocktail party and a high-flying reception in a Giant Ferris Wheel. There is so much going on that I won't list the details here but I invite you to visit the ILAB website and the ILAB Pop Up Blog where you can see exactly what is happening and where.

23 APRIL 2016 … ON FIVE CONTINENTS … IN ALL LANGUAGES … BRINGING THE BOOKS TO THE PEOPLE AND FIGHTING FOR A MORE LITERATE WORLD ...

… THIS IS ILAB ON UNESCO WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY!

There is so much going on that I won’t list the details here but I invite you to visit the ILAB website and the ILAB Pop Up Blog where you can see exactly what is happening and where.

I hope that you will take part in next Saturday’s celebrations. If you are an ILAB affiliate join one of the events, if you are a book collector or librarian visit one of the events and whatever your relationship to the book, please support UNESCO’s literacy work by donating to their South Sudan project – the Forest Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative. South Sudan is a country where 70 % of the adult population and 84 % of all females are illiterate so even just a small donation can make a very real difference. Please join us in celebrating World Book and Copyright Day this year by attending one of the events and giving a donation to UNESCO’s work towards a more literate world.

FOLLOW US LIVE ... ILAB POP UP BOOK FAIRS ... ACROSS THE WORLD ... ON UNESCO WORLD BOOK & COPYRIGHT DAY ... 23 APRIL 2016!

All organisers of the events and we can only echo ILAB President Norbert Donhofer’s call for your support for the activities that will take place this Saturday. It is an exciting day when for 24 hours antiquarian booksellers across the world work together on one project. This project, showcasing rare books and making a stand for a more literate world, is dear to the hearts of the 1,800 booksellers who make up ILAB.

At times during the organising of this year’s events we wondered if it is worth the large amount of work that goes into organising and publicising this celebration - and then we saw the video on the website of UNESCO’s Forest Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative. It is humbling and we challenge anyone to watch it and not want to support the work of Forest Whitaker. What he, his team and the young South Sudanese Peace Ambassadors are doing isn’t charity but empowerment!

Join us this weekend to enjoy the thrill rare books can offer and while doing so give just a little to make sure that in South Sudan books are no longer rare and literacy is common!

See you on Saturday!
